COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the County Council was held on Monday. Present: Mr. J. Elliot (in the chair), Messrs. Brown. Price, Langley, and King. ' Gravel Pit. — A letter was read from Mr. J. Carter drawing the attention of the Council to the dangerous state of 'the gravel pit on his property at the Durham Road. — The matter was deferred. Damage on Hurford Road. — A letter was read from the Commissioners of the Omata Road District, asking the Council to pay the sum of £1 6s. for damage done by the servants of the Council to the Hurford Road. — The consideration of the letter was adjourned until nest meeting. Patea Count]/. — A circular was received from the Chairman of the Patea County Council, forwarding a resolution passed b} r that Council, as follows : — " That in the opinion of this Council it is desirable that County Councils" should be constituted Land Boards ; and that the chairman request the co-opera-tion of the other Councils.'' — The question was not discussed. Engineer's Report. — A report by the Engineer was read, stating that ihe tender of W. H. Buck (£36 Gs. 4d.) for repairs to the Inland Onairo Bridge had been accepted. Instiuctions had been given to have the Waiwakaiho toll-house repaired. The culvert nsar the Kent Road was being attended to, but owing to the bad weather it would require another day to finish it. The repairs authorised to the Mangorei, Oakura, and Stony River Bridges had been completed during the month. The chords in the Mangorei Bridge were in a very bad condition, and would require repairs. Plans and specifications had been prepared for the proposed bridge over the Waiongona, on the Hursthouse Road. Waiongona Bridge. — Mr. BROWN moved, and Mr. Langley seconded "That the Chairman and Engineer be authorised to accept tenders for the erection of the Waiongona Bridge on the Hursthouse Road." — Carried. Timber and Iron Work. — On the motion of Mr. Brown, seconded by Mr. Langley, it was resolved •' That the Chairman and Engineer be authorised to call for tenders for the supply of timber and iron work during the next twelve months." Engineer's Services. — In accordance with notice previously given, Mr. Langley moved " That on account of the finances of the Council, the Engineer receive three mouths' notice that his services will bo dispensed with." — Seconded by Mr. Brown, and carried.—Mr. Langley moved, and Mr. King seconded " That the Council extremely regrets its inability, through financial difficulties, to retain tho services of the Engineer, and thanks him for his past valuable services." County Finance. — On the motion of Mr. Langley, it was resolved " That a Committee be appointed, consisting of Messrs. Elliot, Brown, and the mover to consider and report on the general administration of the County finances, and what alterations and reductions in the present circumstances may be advisable. Road Board Commissioners. — The election of the following Road Board Commissioners was approved of by the Council : — No. 7 (Upper Hurford) District : F. Gilbert, Charles Fincham, and Edward Moyle. No. 2 (Hcnui District) : E. Armitage, S. Matthews. W. Campbell. No. 12 (Waiwakaiho) District : John Brown, Thomas Allen, and J. Finch. No. 4 (Carringtou) District : Wilson, W. French, and H. W. Saxton. No. 3 (Maugorei) District : H. King, Charles Oliver, and S. Allen. No 1G (Okato) District : W. D. Harrod. H. Thompson, and J. O'Connor. No. 11 '( Waitara West) District: W. Rowe, O. Wakefield, W. Hellier. R. Mather, and J. Kelly. No. G (Barrett) : W. M. Burton, W. H. Free, and E. George. No. 9 (Omata) District : R. Hart, J. Jury, and H. J. Crompton. No. 15 (Oakura) : F. J. Mace, J. J. Looney, and W. Elkin. No. 23 (Waitara Eist) : H. Faull, S. Knuckey, and L. Sarten. No. 19 (Clifton) : E. R. Morgan, F. Bayly, and H. Irvine. No. 1 (Mongonui) : J. Keightley, J. A. Jones, W. E. Thompson, J. Sherer, and R. Glegg. Accounts. — Accounts amounting to £230 were passed for payment. The Council then adjourned.
