POLITICAL GOSSIP.
[from our special correspondent.]
PATEA PETITION RELATIVE TO THE HARBOUR. Wednesday, July 7.— Mr. Hainlin asked the Government whether a petition had been received from the settlers of the Patea district with respect to the New Plymouth Harbour, and what action they intended to take on it ? Mr. Hall replied that no petition had been received ; when it was received it would be considered by the Government. CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION REPORT. Mr. Saunders asked the Government when it would be convenient to discuss the report of the Civil Service Commission ? Mr. Hall replied that they proposed to sit on Mondays, and they would give Monday next. Mr. Saunders then gave notice of motion for papers &c, to bring on a debate. This will give the Commissioners an opportunity to reply to the attacks made by the members and civil servants on tho report, and a lively debate may be anticipated. MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS. It is expected that only about half the Bills now before the House will pass, as raeubers will be anxious to get away when the fiuancial measures of the Government are disposed of. A general feeling is also expressed that the Government should have a long recess to make reforms in the Civil Service, in the direction of the report of the Royal Commission.
