[telegraphed by the unitep press association.] WRECK AT AKAROA. Wellington, July 7. Captain Jobnsou, Secretary to the Marine Department, baa received the following telegram from Akaroa : — "A large quantity of eawn timber and the ribs of a vessel are floating in the harbour. I fear a wreck has occurred near the Heads, and I have sent a boat to the Heads to make a search." RIFLE ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, the prospects of the Association for the forthcoming season were discussed and considered. It was stated that when the subscriptions from several of the volunteer companies throughout the Colony were received, the Association would be in a better position than has hitherto prevailed ; and it is expected that the next meeting at Nelson will surpass those hitherto held, both in the number of competitors and the amount o( prizes. GOLD DISCOVERY NEAR WANAKA LAKES. Tho reports re trold discoveries befween Hawea and Waiuika Lakes have received further confirmation. The gold is very coarse.
