[telegraphed by the unitep press association.] WRECK AT AKAROA. Wellington, July 7. Captain Jobnsou, Secretary to the Marine Department, baa received the following telegram from Akaroa : — "A large quantity of eawn timber and the ribs of a vessel are floating in the harbour. I fear a wreck has occurred near the Heads, and I have sent a boat to the Heads to make a search." RIFLE ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, the prospects of the Association for the forthcoming season were discussed and considered. It was stated that when the subscriptions from several of the volunteer companies throughout the Colony were received, the Association would be in a better position than has hitherto prevailed ; and it is expected that the next meeting at Nelson will surpass those hitherto held, both in the number of competitors and the amount o( prizes. MINING ACCIDENT. Kumara, Jnly 7. After iucessant labour by the miners, James Wbelan was released at noon on Tuesday, slightly injured ; and iv the afternoon Phillip Cummings was taken out, fearfnlly crushed about his legs and feet. Amputation will probably be necessary. Both of the rescued men are now in the hospital. Brown effected his escape through the debris of the timber on Monday night, uninjured. The two brothers Phelan are dead, and the miners are now in the shaft trying to get at tho bodies. MAN DROWNED. Dunedin, July 7. James Marks, ship. keeper of the Star of the South, f 11 out of a boat alongside Ruttray-stroot wharf last night, and was drowned. ANOTHER FIHE IN" DUNEDIN. - A four- roomed cotta^o nnd shop at South Dunodin was burnt down through the explosion of a kerosene lamp. The house is inswml, but to what amount ifc is not known. GOLD DISCOVERY NEAR WANAKA LAKES. Tho reports re trold discoveries befween Hawea and Waiuika Lakes have received further confirmation. The gold is very coarse. The whole of the available ground will probably be 00. cupied within a faw days.
