Heavy rains occurred here yesterday, when two thousand logs at tlio booms, Parawai, were washed down, and several were swept out to sea. . CHARGE OF RAPE. A man named William Cnrnell was brought ap on a charge of rape on a girl nine years of a»jo, named Margaret Fergusßon. The particulars are of a most revolting character. The case is proceeding.
ANOTHER BLACKGUARD" Patrick Lawlor, charged with the committal of an unmentionable offence at Tararu, vras remanded. A MEETING REGARDING TAXATION. Wellington, Jane 23. At a public meeting held at Pahautanni, the following resolutions were carried : — (1). This meeting is of opinion that the Property Tax before the House should be done away with and substitnted by an Income and Land Tax. (2). That tho time has now arrived for all native lands to- be placed on the same footing as that, belonging to Europeans as regards general and local taxation, (3). That the honorarium paid to members of the Legislative Council be done away with, and the honorarium paid to members of the Honae of Representatives be reduced one-half. (4). That the Civil Servioe of the Colony be re-organised to meet the present financial position. BURGLARY. Oamaru, June 23. A burglary was committted ou Monday night at a shop in Thames-street. A pave of glass was cut out, but the burglar did not find any money on the premises, and decamped with two dozen bottles of porter. COLLIERY STRIKE AT SHAG POINT. Inspector Thompson left on Tuesday for Shag Point to overlook matters in connection with the strike of colliers at that place. It is saic 1 that Government intends to supply the uien at work on Windsor and Livingstone with full work duriug the winter months. A posse of police were despatched yesterday to Shag Point, owing to the reported disturbance among the colliers there. • RAILWAY ACCIDENT. An accident happened to an express train to-day. Two tracks and one break-van went off the line south of Waikouaiti. DROWNED. Dunedin, June 23. Andrew Morrison, a Government boatman at Mount Allan, on tbe Hindon section of the Otago Central Railway, was drowned on Monday. No particulars yet to hand. A DOCTOR CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER. At tbe Resident Magistrate's Court' Outram, Mr. Simpson gave judgment agaiust Dr. Mcßrearty, who was inferentially charged with neglect as an <*Sbcoucheur.
