[FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] ' April 30. — A requisition is being got up in Carlyle asking Major Atkinson to address his constituents before the session.

The Nelson Colonist says — We learn that Mr. Charles Yates Fell has been appointed Crown Prosecutor and solicitor for this district. We congratulate Mr. Fell on his appointment to this important legal position. The Hon. Mr. Brycc, and Colonel Robertß left town, this afternoon for the Camp at Stoney River. It is expected that the Camp will be removed to-morrow. A per'sldh of gentlemanly appearance, giv ing the name of Dr. Richards, was apprehen. ded at 1 a.m. thismorningby Constable Roach t for disorderly conduct in Devon-street. He was brought up at the Police Court, and fined 10s. and costs. The shipping at the Port of Waitara is steadily on the increase, and shows very clearly the urgent necessity for river improvements, and also the opening through o the railway line to Hawera. The line to Hawera is of the greatest importance both commercially and stragetically, and we hope that nothing Avill be allowed to interfere with its speedy completion. The members of No. 2 Company Taranaki Rifles held a well-attended meeting last night, of which Mr. C. W. Govett was Chairman After some discussion, th« following resolutions were unanimously passed :—": — " That the members of No. 2 Company Taranaki Rifles having some time past enrolled themselves to meet a special emergency, are of opinion that owing to the settled state of the district, there is now no necessity for their services, and they, therefore, request the Government to allow them to disband." — " That should any necessity arise in the future, the members of the corps will be prepared again to offer their services." — The Secretary of the Finance Committee (Mr. Morey), reported that after paying all liabilites he believed there would be a surplus of about £-4, and the disposal of this gave rise'to considerable discussion. A resolution that any surplus moneys should be expended iv prizes, and shot for by the company was negatived, and one to the following effect passed by a large majority, viz.. " That the surplus moneys be handed to the Hospital Board towards suplying books and papers for the use of the Patients. Dr. Russell, of Times correspondent fame demands an inquiry into his allegations against the British troops engaged in the Zulu war. The Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge express their determination to have his charges sifted to the bottom.
