«. Captain Edwin telegraphed List evening — "Indications of stroug winds between west and south, and southeast ; glass rise within twelve lioura ; sea decrease." Last evening a number of gentlemen entertained Mr. L. P. Banks at a private dinner, at the Masonic Hotel, previous to that gentleman's departure from the district. Mr. J. Paul occupied the chair, and a very pleasant evening was spent. A man named John Pound, arrested on the mail steamer, at Auckland, on Wednesday last, at the instance of the Timaru police, was brought up at the Police Court, and charged with leaving his illegitimate children uu protided for, aud was remanded to Timaru. The Government steamer Hiiiemoa arrived in the roadstead this morning, at 5 a.m., from the Mamikau having on board the Hon. Mr. Byrce, Native Minister, and the Hon. F. Whitaker, Attorney-General. The Native Minister landed here, but the AttorneyGeneral proceeded to Wellington.
