The Taranaki Herald. PUBLISHED DAILY. THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 1879.

Yesterday Parliament was opened by Commisflion, and to-day hia Excellency will deliver his usual vice-regal speech ; that done, the struggle will commence. The Wellington papers appear to be all of different opinions as to the result of tho first division. The Post divides pai'tioH as follows : — Thirty -nine' Ministerialists, forty-two Oppositionists, and sevon doubtful. Tho Xcw-Xealander says there arc forty-eight Ministerial, thirty-six anti-Ministerial, and six doubtful; while tho Time* says thero are forty-two anti-Greyitcs, thirty-nine Greyites, and sevon doubtful. Tho Post says — " It ia confidently asserted by those who are in a position to judge, that if a motion be tabled, as wo presume will be tho case, approving tho Liberal principles but expressing a want of confidence in the Grey Miuistry, soveral names which arc now classed either as " M." or "D." will be found voting in the Opposition lobby. Among thoso mentionod are, for instance, Messrs. AVliyte, "Whitaker, Masters, McCaughan, and Shepherd ; whilo Messrs. Ballance and Montgomery are not looked upon as safe voters for the Ministry." From other sources wo gather that efforts are being made to resuscitate tho old middlo party under Mr. Montgomery as loader, between whom and Mr. Hall there will bo a race to sec which shall bo the first to declare a want of confidence in Sir George Grey. It is thought the latumafo of tins third party is two-fold — first to got Sir George Grey out of tho way, and second to form a Ministry of which Mr. Ballance will bo a conspicuous figure. From our correspondent wo learn that it is probable that Mr. Hall will move a vote of no confidence in the Government, as now constituted, in a similar manner to that of last session, when, after a debute, a division will tako place, and the question as to who aro to hold the reins of office will bo determined. We, however, hope that the matter once settled, no farther time will be wasted in squabbling.
