MAORI DIVORCE CASE. Sydney Tawhang, a celebrated native chief, who is married to a European woman, was charged by his wifo with assault, arising out of her having hooted at him in Queen-street. The prosecutrix did not appear, Mr. Duffaur, the solicitor, stating that a deed of separation had been made out. The case was dismissed. TREE ACCIDENT. A man named McGrath has been badly injured by a falling tree at Wangarei. He was brought to the Auckland Hospital. , RAILWAY COMPENSATION. In the Kaipara railway compensation case, under the Public Works Act, James Maxwell claimed £1880 and was' awarded £100. TOBACCO ROBBERY. A large quantity of tobacco has been stolen from tlie bonded warehouses of Kutnmer and Co., Port-streot. This is the second similar robbery. MORE A.C.'S FOR TARANAKI. Another detach rncnfc of Armed Contabalary at Cambridge are under orders for Taranaki. PROPOSED REDUCTION OF ENGINEER'S WAGES. Wellington, June 28. A large meeting of engineers and others was held on Friday evening, when a deputation was appointed to wait on employers relative to proposed ■ reductiou of wages, ''he men agreed to work short hours on full pay, or accept a slight reduction lv wages until the depression in trade had passed over. Mills, of Wellington, meets the Borough Council to-night, relative to their taking over a quan. tity ot water pipes recently arrived by the Renfrewshire. About ;& hundred representative men of the city were present at the banquet given to Judge Bathgate on Friday, who is on the eve of his departure on a visit home. Messrs. R. Stout, R. Gillies, R. Oliver, the Hon W. H. Rey: nolds and Dr. McDonald delivered admirable speeches, and the proceedings altogether were of a highly interesting and successful character.
