PUBLIC MEETING AT BELL BLOCK.
A large meeting of the settlers interested in the defence of the district was held at the school-room, Bell Block on Tuesday evening last. Mr. T. Kelly, M.H.R., occupied the chair. The Chairman explained at some length the present position of the'native dificuity, and the action the Government had taken to provide for its general defence. After explaining the special conditions under which the Defence Minister had agreed to accept the services of volunteers for the defence of their homes, he stated that under the threatening aspect of affairs it was the duty of every serviceable man to volunteer for the defence of the district in which he resided. He therefore hoped that those who intended to aid in forming a local defence corps would write down their names at once.
Captain Cornwall briefly addressed the meeting, urging the necessity of a disciplined force in the district as something to rely o:i in case of danger.
In a short time some fifty-four men werj enrolled, and arrangements made for swearing them in and electing officers on Thursday eveniug next. It is probable that a considerable number of names will then be added to the list.
