An Englishman, newly arrived at Canton, wished to have a bamboo verandah constructed round his house, aud in vain endeavored to make his Chinese servant, who had beeu recommended to him as a perfect marvel of erudition, understand what he required. Shotly afterwards an old resident called, to whom he stated the difficulty ; " could he make him understand ?"
