GERMAN DESERTER. A man named Carl Putschkor, well known as a pianist, &c, has been arrested on a charge of desertion from the German navy, ft appears that during a former visit of the same German warship to this port, the prisoner renewed his acquaintance with the friends from Fatherland, and joined the .ship, but deserted afterwards. His remaining behind has resulted in his present arrest. WALKING MATCH. A two- mile walking match for £20 a-side is creating- great interest. PERJURY AND ARSON. Lesur has been committed at Hamilton, VVaikalo, for perjury. He has also beeu ordered to be prosecuted for arson. LARGE CARGO. The barque Ellonora cleared for New Yovk with a caryo valued at £20,000. IRISH EMIGRATION. Sir J. Yogel has appointed Mr. G. M. Reed to the office of Emigration
Agent for the North of Ireland, with unrestricted powers to send oat emigrants. We understand that Mr. Reed's head-quarters will be fixed at Belfast, but that he will also occasion, ally vi^it the Northern Districts of England. APPLICATION FOR ENGINEER OF HARBOUR BOARD. Geahamstown, June 4. Mr. W. PJrrington, M. 1.C.H1., will probably be an applicant for the position of Engineer to the Harbour Board at New Plymouth. Mr. Errington designed and supervised the large Public Works here ; also, the Auckland water works and docks. He has had large and varied experience both here aud in the adjacent Colonies, and in the old country under his father, who was Eugineer to the Marquis of Waterford. ARRIVAL OF ENGLISH VESSEL. Wellington, June 4. The Barque Loch Ken has arrived from London, 96 days out. No passengers ; general cargo. During the passage a seaman named Jordan fell from aloft and was killed. APPEAL COURT. \ At the Court of Appeal to-day, judgment was given iv favour of the Dunedin H arbour Board, in the case of Proudfoot v. Dunedin Harbour Board Council. Plaintiff obtained leave to appeal to the Privy Council. MAYOR OF WELLINGTON^SUES FOR PEACE. It is understood that the Mayor will wait on the Premier, aud urge on him the advisibility of maintaining peace of the Colony, because, in the event of war, the Colonial securities will be depreciated. APPEAL COURT. Judgments were delivered in the Court of Appeal to-day as follows: — Regina v. Reed ; conviction affirmed. Benney v. Calcott ; appeal sustained. Joseph v. Wylie and Git'dlestone ; judgment for defendants. Throutbeck and Richardson. Judgment for defendant. Proudfoot v. Otairo Harbour Board ; judgment for defendant. Kawatini v. Kinross ; judgment for defendant. ANOTHER FAILURE. Charles McKirdy, contractor, has filed a deed of arrangment with his creditors.
