The Taranaki Herald. PUBLISHED DAILY. FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1879.

« An attempt is being made by the Wanganui Borough to get the adjacent Counties aud Boroughs to join in the cost of erection and maintenance of a hospital at Wanganui. Patea County and the Borough of Palmerstou are the only two. bodies, of those invited, who show a disposition to hang aloof. A Conference is about to be held at Wangamij by representatives of the Wanganui Borough Council, and the Counties of Wanganui, Rangitikei, and Manawatu. The proposition is that a hospital should be built at Wangatmi, to cost £5,000, of which amount the Government promise £2,500, while Wanganui offers to furnish another £1,000, leaving the remaining £1,500 to be provided by the other outside bodies. It is proposed that the cost of maintenance should be borne by the participating bodies in proportion to the number of patients sent by the different districts. Wanganui being in communication with all the places named by good roads, and partly by rail, whilst rapid advance is being made with the line towards Patea, it is thought the i establishment of one large and well-appointed I hospital at Wanganui would be preferable, and should suit all the districts named, far better than the establishment of small separate hospitals. Patea has had nothing but trouble iv regard to hospital matters for the i last eighteen months, and not having been | able to agree, to' terms offered by Waugauui, the Patea Council lately decided to erect a hospital, and tenders are now being invited for the same. While we can scarcely offer any advice on the: matter, we shall watch with some considerable interest the result of the proposed Conference. We are inclined to think that as the distance between New j Plymouth and Wanganui is so great it is almost imperative that hospital accommodation should be provided at some place within the Patea County, aud Carlyle being the County town, and nearest to the centre of the County, a hospital there should best meet present requirements.

Pay or be sued. Mr. T. E. Hamerton seems to have fallen in with that view, tind has intimated to his owing friends accordingly. Captain E .Iwin repjrtel yesterday :—": — " Bad weather approaching in any direction between south-east and east and north. Farther fall of glass." Two daily mails arc now made up between Wanganui and Carlyle, including all the inmediate offices. In addition to the ordinary daily mail between Hawera and Wanganui, there will bs two mails on three days a week, leaving Hawera every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. An adjourned meeting of creditors in the estate of John Scott Dobbin, hotel-keeper, was held this morning, and the offer of 2s. Gd. in the £, made by Messrs. Humphries and Paul, was accepted. The opinion of Mr. Hesketh re the Bill of Sale held by Messrs. Humphries and Paul, was opposed to its validity. From an advertisement it will be seen that a new industry is being started at the Hcnui. A drysalter — Mr. R. G. Balding — is advertising for various animal parts and fish, which after salting, smoking, and so on, wili be open for sale as food or for export. We wish success to the new venture. We arc glad to see that the youth of New Plymouth are having many opportunities of getting a higher class education than they could have hoped to have in times not long since past. Only a short time ago wo had to speak about the higher instruction offered by one of our local seminaries, and now we have the pleasure of calling public attention to the lessons on drawing offered by Mr. Kerry on the reasonable terms mentioned iv our advertising columns. One of the surest signs of the advancement of the town is its power to attract higher class talent, and when this means the improvement of our children, and the refinement resulting from higher class pursuits, we feel sure that they ought to be patronised. A correspondent writes : — Rather a Sell. — An amusing occurence took place at Manutahi the other evening, on the occasion of the special train running down from luglcwood with the Hon. Mr. Macandrew. Three railway employees, who live not a hundred miles from Manutahi, and who by the way are particularly fond of " tripping it on the light fantastic toe," when the labours of the day arc ended, were actively engaged at a set of Lancers iv the dance room ; when, horror J a long whistle is heard in the direction of the Manutahi crossing. Tom looks at Jack, and Jack at Tom. Tom : " I say, captain, that blooming engine's run off." " Sure enough," says Jack, "and she's whistling for us fellows." — Exit the trio, and a race for the crossing, where they arrived in time to hear the engine running down to Sentry Hill. I left.
