ENGLISH SHIP. Auckland, April 28. Arrived : the New Zealand Shippiug Company's barque Carmelo, from London. PROGRESS. Daring the present week, the ballasting between Newmarket and the wharf terminus has been completed, and the locomotive is now running the whole distance. The extension of the Waikato railway to the Queen-street wharf is not yet undertaken. NGAPUHI NATIVES. The Ngapuhi natives who came np in the Hinetnoa, left for Waikato this morning to attend the native meeting. DROWNED. The body of a fisherman named Jackson, better known as " Rangitoto Jack," was found floating in the Rangitoto Channel, by the schooner Christiana. His dingy was found near it, containing a live goat and some loaves of bread. He must have fallen overboard. IHREE CHEERS FOR HENDERSON. At the Artillery Company's competition, Gunner Henderson carried off the champion bolt, and the gold and silver medals. STILL NO INVITE. Auckland, April 29. Sir George Grey and Mr. Sheehan not finding any invitation to Kopua on arrival in Auckland, have deemed it desirable not to go. NGAPtJHIS PROPOSALS. The Ngapubi chiefs, who have gone to the meeting, intend to make there the following proposals. These are the proposals of Ngapui and Te Karawa : — 1. Tawhiao should consent to the seven proposals made by Sir George Grey at the Hikurangi meeting last May, because the old pakeha proverb says half a loaf is better than no bread. 2. If the Waikatos persist in demanding the restoration of all the confiscated lands, they can lay their grievances before the British Parliament, and an international tribunal of Europe

which is also open to them, for them to determine all such disputes in the same manner as disputes between Turkey and Russia were decided by the arbitration of representatives of the European Powers by the Berlin Treaty. 3. These are the words of the Ngapuhi and Te Karawa. The Maori King and Te Whiti neither of those two, nor their people, should obstruct the construction of railways and telegraphs over the land lawfully purchased, because such works are for the benefit of the Europeans and Maoris. FOR WAITARA. The schooner Amaranth, which has arrived from the Waitara, loads back with timber. ARRIVAL. The s.s. Hero has arrived from Sydney. GOVERNOR GOING TO AUCKLAND. Sir Hercules Robinson comes to Auckland at tho conclusion of iis Southern trip, and will remain a month. The Hinemoa leaves on Sunday to bring him up. THE TAUPO. Tadraxga, April 29. Tho work of raising the Taupo ia proceeding well. Chains have been passed under and fastened to spars across the deck ; and nearly all the coal and cargo has been got out. SUPREME COURT. Wanganui, April 29. The following cases were decided at the Supreme Court : — Alfred Luxford, for horse stealing, six months; John Donahay, robbery of £18, one year ; Henry Ryan, robbery of £G, acquitted ; W. Conrad, horse stealing, six months. GEO. THOMAS'S ESTATE. Wellington, April 28. The liabilities of Geo. Thomas are £13,9-10. The assets are as follows — Book debts (good), £3,431 ; doubtful, £725 ; stock, £2,276 ; shares, £300 ; bills for collection, £1,500 ; deficiency, £5,708. The cause of the insolvency is bad debts, £5,000, and losses on vessels, £2,500. FIRST PILE. The first pile of the railway wharf was driven to-day. PATENT SLIP. The annual meeting of the Patent Slip Company was held to-day. Captain Peiterson, of the s.s. Taiaroa, was to day fined 405.. for carrying an excessive number of passengers, and Is. per head for sixteen beyond the legal number. BRITISH MAILS. Tho City of Sydney, with the London mails of the 27th March, left San Francisco on the 14th April, contract date. HOME MAILS. The Australia, with the March colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 23rd, one day in advance of contract time. TIDAL WAVE. Greymoutii, April 26. A tidal wave three feet high came up the river last night, and broke tho moorings of the tug Despatch — one rope was 4| inches thick. DROWNED. Christchurch, April 29. The body of a young man named Bush has been found drowned in the Avon. He had a letter addressed to his father in England in his pocket, which showed the case to be one of suicide. CHINESE PETITION. Dunedin, April 28. The Chinese presented an address to the Governor at Qneenstown, in which they asked to be permitted to come and remain here without objection. The Governor replied that he knew the Chinese irom having been four years in their country, and while Governor would favonrably consider their claims.
