ATTEMPT TO BE MADE AGAINST BUILDING PRISON AT TARANAKI.
CAQCUSES BEING FORMED.
[PKOM OUR OWN COKKESPONDENT.]
Ax attempt will be made in tho Legislative Council, by Captain Frasor, to prevent the acceptance of teutlers for building the gaol at New Plymouth by contract, but that it should be built by prison labour only. A similar resolution will be moved iv the House by Mr. Stout. The movers forget that, before the prisoners can be removed to Tarauaki for harbour purposes, a buildiug must be prepared for their reception. Caucuses sue now the order of the day, but they are special as regards the interests of sections of the Opposition, and are not united on any common basis. The Auckland caucuses are aimed :.t getting a larger share of other peoples' mouey ; they, are not very particular whether it comes out of other Provinces land revenue or out of the consolidated fund. They are sufficiently advanced to be above insisting on names which offend Southern cars, and bo long as they get the money they are ready to swear if needed that it does not affect the sacred compact of 1856. The Otago caucauses on the other side are convened for the purpose of taking joint action to preserve the revenues* of Otago from any assault by their hungry Northern allies. They ihink that it is possible that history may repeat itself, and that in invitiug the Northern hordes to aid them ngaiust the eucroaches of the Colony or their territory that their allies may take themselves what they refused to the Colony. How to preserve their riches they are at a loss to couceive, but they hope that when two or three are gathered together in caucus that inspiration will be given them. The Government, as may be supposed, are almost uua&sailable wheu the councils of the Opposition are so divided by mutual distrust
