EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board mot on "Wednesday, when Mr. B. [ Wells presided. Present: Archdeacon Govett, Messrs. Andrews, Lawrence and Syue. Financial Condition of tlw Board.— ln answer to a question of Mr. Andrews, the Secretary stated there was only £100 in outstanding rates, and they had £100 coming to them from the Government. The teachers' salaries for the last quarter, amounting to £340 were not paid, and there were other liabilities to meet, but that the Board had no fuuds, without it received assistance from the Government. — Mr. Andrews moved, and Syjib secouded, "That the Chairman of the Education Board be requested to write to the Colouial Secretary, explaining the financial position of the Board, and its urgent necessity for money to meet its present liabilities, the school teachers' salaries for the last quarter being in arrears to the extent of over £300." — Copies of the resolution were ordered to be sent to the members of the Province. Ttiaclwrs 1 Certificate Granted. — A thirdclass certificate was granted to Miss Shaw. Her exuininatiou papers showed 104: marks out of a possible 150 marks. Letter from Colonel Trimble. — A letter was read from Colonel Trimble, asking the Board to exchange section ,168 for 170. The section he otfered was a mile nearer Inglewood, and land of equal quality and value. He also offered to give the Board a school site on his land any time within the next seven years. On too motion of Mr. Syjik, seconded by Mr. Lawrence, it was resolved, "That the Board are disposed to accede to Colonel Trimble's request, but at present, and until the Educational Reserves are made over to the Board, it has no power to make the exohange asked for." Urenni Softool. — A letter was read from Mr. Henry Good stating that the building the school was held in was an old rickety affair, and not worth £15; and if the Board would give them a section of land and £50 a very good school-house might be erected. A private letter from the Rev. P. Walsh, was also read, in which the dilapidated state of the building was spoken of. On the motion of Mr. Symb, seconded by Mr. Lawrence, the Chairman was authorised to adopt some temporary measure with regard to school accommodation at Urenui. Removal of the Tikorangi School-house. — A letter was read from the Chairman of the Tikorangi School Committe, Mr. R. Hicka, requesting that the school-house might be removed at once, and that permission had been j granted to allow the settlers to take it across Major Stapp's farm to its new site. — The Secretary said he had seen the land given the Board bj' Mr. Cox, and, without speaking for or against the removal of the building, there was no doubt it was an excellent site. — On the motion of Mr. Andrews, seconded by Mr. Lawrence, it was resolved that the application of Mr. Hicks, for the immediate removal of the Tikorangi school-house, be acceded to, providing the cost of doing so did not exceed £10. Land for a Cemetery at Tihorangi. — A letter from Mr. Armstrong was read asking that a portion of the school reserve be set apart as a cemetery. — The Secretary was directed to I write and inform Mr. Armstrong that as soou as as the Board had power to deal with the matter his request should be attended to; in the mean time the matter should be brought to the notice of the Deputy Superintendent. Ma7igorei. — A letter was read from Mr. Z. W. Wells, stating that his cottage now used as a school- house, would be wanted by him next spring. Exemption from 'Education Rate. — On the recommendation of the Local Committee Mrs. Taylor and — Parker, an old man, were exempted from paying the Education Rate. Gill-rtrect School.— The Secretary wns instructed to inspect the school building in Gillstreet, and have any necessary repairs done to make it watertight. The Board then adjourned till Wednesday, the 2nd August, at 2 p.m. J
