HOW THE PUBLIC MAY CONFER NO ' SMALL BENEFIT ON THEMSELVES, AND AN EASY WAY TO DO IT. rnHIS BENEFIT, Ladies and Gentlemen, is 1_ in having a well-laid out Recreation Ground or Public Domain. The attaining of such a pleasurable resort ought certainly to have a prominent place in the aspirations of each individual in the community, forasmuch as it may at no distant period become a very valuable accession to every member thereof ; besides an acceptable heritage to their children, children's children, ad infinitum. What is now wauted is the exercise of a little liberality towards strengthening the funds of the Board, whose members are ever ready and willing to give an account of their stewardship. Let us, by all means, one nnd all, support them in the good work so auspiciously begun, so that in the coming years the merry ring of cheerful voices from our anniversary picnics and social gatherings may be heard on these endowed grounds — grounds capable, by aid of a little art, of rivalling iv sceuic beauty with any reserve of the kind in the Colonies, and which we 'shall have the satisfaction of terming our own. 'Tis there, visiting friends and strangers, will be enabled to while pleasantly away many leisurely hours ; 'tis there the athlete will betake himself to contest his strength and skill in invigorating games ; there the student will steal to enjoj- undisturbed meditation ; there the invalid will be found recruiting health, from pure air and gentle exercise ; and there, even- now, the plants are in the ground which may eventually become trusting trees for wooers yet unboru. Now, the easy method proposed to further this desirable object, is simply as follows: — The Proprietors of Victoria House nnd Uncle Tom's Wardrobe enguge, for Fourteeu Days, commencing on Saturday, the 3rd June, to pay the Board, as direct subscriptions from their Cash Purchasers, the handsome allowance of Fifteen Per Cent, on all their purchases. Of course, a correct account of individual purchases will be kept, and, whatever may be the amount— Oue Shilling for every Six Shillings and Eightpence they may have spent at their Establishments within the Fourteen Days — will appear attached to their names in the list of subscribers about to be jniblished by the Board, without the slightest allusion being made as to the mode of payment; in fact, quite tho same as if the Board had received it from their own hands. Possibly there may be a few, either from apprehensiou of injured interest or from a constitutional weakness for the distinction of being considered knowing ones, who mny say nil i<ianner of things detractive of this project, such ns this— 4 ' Oh, it's all very well, but the heavy percentage can be easily put ou the goods." Don't believe it; the goods had all been plainly marked weeks ere this idea was conceived, and by these same marks, the -goods will positively be sold. At the very least, the offer is surely worth 6ome consideration, remembering always this — that throughout the prescribed time, whenever you lay out Six Shillings and Eightpence at these Establishments, you there and then become a subscriber to the Recreation Grounds Board. 519 j 17 TO THE ELECTORS OF THE TOWN OF NEW PLYMOUTH.
