ARRIVAL OF THE SUEZ MAIL.
GKXERAL SUMMARY OF NEWS. London, February 19. At nn adjourned meeting of Colonial Institute here on the 2nd instant, in discussing the subject of Unity of Empire, Sir George Campbell, latelj- Lieutenant- Governor of Bengal, created somo vxoit-meut by making a disintegration speech. He contended that there was a virtual separation already as regarded Canada. On the lCfh instant, Mr. Cheesom read a paper on Fiji, i>a«t and present. The Duke of Manchester presided, and expressed a hoj.e that New Guinea would shortly be annexed. The speakers were Messrs. G. Wingfield, Jenkins, Fergusson, Kiunaird, Halliburton, and Youug. With three men already rescued, the late surgeon of H.M.S. 'Dido.' on his arrival off the Nore, by passenger ship from Australia, was arrested and will be tried by court martini for desertion. Mr. llolloway reports strongly in favour of New Zealand as a iietd for the emigration of agricultural labourers. During the year 1574 there arrived in Liverpool from Canada and the United States 78,000 persons. Many came with return tickets. Some sensation has been created by the Bishop of London having interdicted the Rev. W. 11. Freemantle from preaching in Dr. Parkcs' City Temple (Congregational). Legal proceedings were threatened, and Mr. Freeinautle attended service and explained the cause of the non-fulfilment of his promiso to 3,000 persons. The Church Establishment has incurred further unpopularity by a bigoted Churchman near Oxford refusing for eleven days to inter a parishioner. The duty was delayed till another clergyman was forced by the indignant crowd to read the burial service within the Church, which was broken open for that purpose. A Bill for the promotion of the Channel Tunnel was laid lefore the French National Assembly. Mr. Holloway hr.3 proposed to erect a college for women, to accommodate 400 students. It is Stated in France, on semi-official authority, that a Buoaapartist conspiracy for the overthrow of the Septenuiate is completely organized, and has become a State within a State. Provincial, ns well as leading State and military officers, have been appointed, so as to be in readiness to commence their duties at any moment. Part of the rumour is that the Prince Imperial is to be affianced to the sister of the Princess of Wales. Garibaldi, upon taking his seat in the Vatican Parliament, after taking the customary oaths, was greeted with a triple salvo of applause, and warmly received by the King. Garibaldi eschews politics, but will concentrate all his energies on the great work of saniti-.iy reform, which he believes will restore ' Home to her former grandeur.
