LATE NEWS FROM BATAVIA.
FEARFUL HAVOC OF SMALL POX.
We are in receipt of the Javasche Courant from the Btli to the 22nd of April last, and subjoin the following abstract of the intelligence therewith transmitted. It will be seen by our readers that the news from the Netherlands Indies is by no means unimportant.
The Javasclie Courant of the 22nd April last, contains numerous reports from the different large islands, provinces, and principal districts of the Netherlands Indies. The small-pox appears to be pretty generally prevalent. In the districts of Tjiandjoer and Soekapoera, the state of the public health was not satisfactory. In Tjiandjoer there were 287 cases of smallpox ; whereof 189 had cases of recovery, and 38 cases of death. In Soekapoera, the cases of small-pox had amounted to 320 — out of which there had been 126 cases of recovery, and 46 deaths.
The health reports from Tagal, for March last, are more favourable than they were for the previous month. In February last, there were here 51 cases of small-pox, 86 cases of fever and ague, and one case of cholera. At Tagal, during March last, there were 39 cases of small-pox, 85 cases of fever, and 4 cases of cholera. There had been seven deaths from small-pox, and one from cholera.
The small-pox, during March last, was raging in Bagalen. In that Province, during that month, 5,681 persons had been taken sick with that complaint. Of these, 364 had died, and 3,106 had recovered. The continuation of the epidemic was (according to the Courant) a good deal to be attributed to the carelessness and selfneglect of the natives.
From Djokdjokarta the health reports for March last, sent in to the Colonial Government, state that there had been 1,010 cases of small-pox. 377 persons so affected had recovered, and 58 had died. The rest remained under treatment.
In Kadoe, the small-pox continued to be in the ascendancy. In the chief district of Magelang, up to the end of March, the cases of small-pox were reported to have amounted to 1,034 ; and in the chief district of Temangoong there were 216 cases. From both of these districts there was a totel of 321 deaths, reported to have been caused by this disease. Vaccine lymph had, more than once, been received from the city of Batavia and from Tagal.
At Macassar, 110 persons had been attacked by the small pox. Of these 10 had died, 85 had recovered, and 15 were still under treatment
