THE MEMORIAL TO THE COUNCIL.

To the Editor of the Taranaki Herald.

Sir, — The community has been agitated for some considerable time on the question whether it was advisable or not that the Government'should take upon themselves the landing of goods from the vessels in the roadstead.

Now, an expression of the public feeling on the matter was shown by a large public meeting, where it was carried unanimously that monopolies being unjust, it was fair and right thab any party or parties complying with the " Marine Act " were entitled to a license ; but in addition to this, a memorial signed by a large number of our most respectable settlers was brought before the Provincial Council. It was received with great disfavour, and the representatives of the Town were most anxious that the matter should be settled by the Provincial Government taking the management of the boating department into their own hands, "knowing at the same time that tlwir constituents were opposed to it.

Some of the members went so far as to state that the memorialists "did not know what they were signing." To those members' statements I declare that it is untrue. Party feeling or love of office may induce men to say that which their consciences warn them is not right. One. member even stated that " having got the Government into a mess, they must stick to them."

I signed the memorial. I did so because I knew that the boating department had been carried on effectually by those men who applied for a license, and, therefore, I do not think that life and property should be sacrified or endangered by an inefficient crew, such as the Government have been compelled to employ.

As some of our members stated that they would resign if requested by their constituents, I think it would be only fair on their part to call a meeting of their supporters who put them into Council, and ask whether they did or do not approve of the course now pursued ? One who Signed the Memorial.
