The Manawatu.— The Wanganul Times bb,jb— " The Saperintendent has finally and amicably arranged the long pending dispute with the Ngatiraukawa. The non-seHers are perfectly content with the portion of land set apart for them. Dr. Featheraton has returned to Wellington, and the next step is to proclaim the native title extinguished over the rest of the Manawatu block. This is another material benefit conferred upon this Province by the accession of the Fox Ministry to office." New Zealand Medal. — "Sailors as well as soldiers," says the Pall Mall Gazette, " are to have the New Zealand medal. We are glad to see that her Majesty, or rather the Horse Guards, are disposed to appreciate and reward merit, as considered apart from mere success. The theory used to be that mistake and misfortune were a sort of fault; but, if once we could afford to maintain this, after the Crimean war it became altogether untenable, and the authorities now see no reason why a defeat or two, even by a handful of ill-armed savages a fraction of their number, should interfere with the decoration of an army, any more than with the knighthood of their general." An unsuccessful lover was asked by what means he lost his intended. "Alas!" he cried, "I flattered her until she got too proud to speak to me."
