EAST COAST— NAPIER DISTRICT.
ANOTHER REPORTED MASSACRE BY TE KOOTI AND THE EX-PIIISONERS. From Wellington we have a Post of Friday evening last, from which we take the following telegram :—": — " Napier, March 12. Auckland news received last night. Te Kooti, reinforced, by Uriweras, surrounded Opotiki on Wednesday. Murdered Surveyor Pitcairn, perhaps others. Raturaka and party of friendlies at Whakare taken prisoners. A general attack on the settlers around is threatened. A report that five settlers have been murdered at the Waikato reached the Thames on Sunday. No details. Possibly refers to the White Cliffs massacre. Thursday, March 11, 2.36 p.m. — Tt is reported that the Maori King has declared war, and in all probability it is true. In consequence of this news, Ropata and the bulk of his followers have remained on the East Coast. The ' St. Kilda' put in at Castlepoint, and has twenty Ngatiporous on board. Upwards of sixty remained at Napier with Ropata. Hati Wirr and Haukamau, two chiefd, in charge of the party. All tho other natives would have come, but Ropata used moral and physical efforts to prevent them.
