BATHS IN AUCKLAND.
We ettrsict the following from the New Zealand Hem 7 d : — A short time since we announced tna faciS that a joint, stock company was about to be formed tor tho purpose of erecting swimming b'attia in a central portion od the beach, in which . first clnsg accommodation would be afforded. We are glad to find that the matter has not been allowed to drop, and tho matter will be actively proceeded wiihou th c Superintendent's return from Wellington. It is proposed to build these baths at the foot of Graham street. The entrance will be by a buildingfronting to this street, of seven rooms, four on the ground and three upon the upper story ; an entrance hall, with a waiting or refreshment room on either side, and a commodious kitchen at the rear, the three rooms above being set apart for tho use of the person in charge of fcho establishment. Immediately at tho back, and entered from the building is tlie enclosed bath itself, the dimensions of which it is proposed shall be 50 feet by 100 feet j around three sides of the bath will be a convenient platform, aud back from ttiat the dressing rooms each! 7 feet by 8 feet. The north end of the bath will be open to tiie flux and influt of the tide, though! divided off from%he main water by a strong grating to keep Bha"rfi|at a^safe and respectful distance; Tho water will blqjntirely changed twice during tho twenty-four hoursj and be constantly in motion with the incoming alid outgoing of the tide, during the whole time that ufys in use. 1 Our lady readers will be pleased to learn 1 that-it is intended that for a certaiu portion of each day the bath shall be devoted exclusively to their use.' It is proposed to limit the expense of the undertaking to some £2,000, to be raised in shares of £5 each, witli power to add to the capital,' if required. Application has been made to the Superintendent for a lease of tho groanJ, arid it is awaiting his return to Auokland, in order to fillip carry ont this arrangement in a satisfactory manner that the present delay has take ri place. Should this project be carried out, and Mr. Standwell succeed irf establishing a bath on the eastern side of Fort Britomart, a very great benefit will have been conferred upon the citizens of Auckland, who with a splendedsalt-h-ater harbour beside them, have hitherto been unable to make use of it for purposes of bathing, partly because they have no space enclosed from the public gaze, and partly becauso of. the r!sS they would fun from the attack of sharks.
t The B\llarat Exhibition.—" Yesterday," says the Melbourne Argue, of the 28th ultimo, " the Ballarat District Exhibition was opened with great' edat by His Excellency the Governor. The day was kept as a close holiday, and His Excellency's, enfry int6 town was witnessed by a concourse of 5,000 or 6,000 persons.
Threo gentlemen from Lyttelton went on an" excursion on Saturday last with a view of hunting pigs on tho Peninsula. They had succeeded in! killing four small ones when their doga dislodged a huge boar, which came rushing down upon them. To avoid the charge of the infuriated animal they were obliged to separate and take tho best sheltor they could. The dogs shortly overtook the beast arid fastened upon him — upon which it threw itself down an embankment, about 10 feet high and very precipitous, the dogs still holding on. Iteventnaily ttoundored into a waterholo. One of the party, Mr. Drew, followed as quickly as possible and endeavoured to stab the boar to the heart with a sharp knife. Owing to a sudden motion of the animal the handle of the knife slipped through his fingers and caused the' blade, wtiich was very sharp, to cut tho palm of his hand frightfully. Nothing daunted he slipped tho knife to his left hand, and succeeded in killing the boar. His hand was then bound up, as circumstances would permit, and on Ins arrival iv Port Lyttelton Dr. Donald dres3ed thewound, which is not likely to prove dangerous, although it will deprive him of the use of his" right hand for about three weeks.— Evening ATu.t7,September 8.-
