MILITARY.
'The Alexandra arrived on Thursday, bringing bullocks, horses, and stores belonging to the Land Transport corps, and left again yesterday for another cargo. As there are said to be still 400 horses to bring, besides bullocks and stores, it will be some considerable time before they are all here if only this one vessel is to be employed. The troops, probably, will come down in the men-of-war. There is less reason for delay on account of the yet early time of year, because there is a good deal of useful, and even necessary preliminary work to be done near horne — that is at Mataitawa and the Waitara. The natives at the former place are said to be busy getting ready the land for planting. What they are doing in the way of fortifying no one knows, and it is a little curious that no one has been to see. But we still incline to the belief that there are other than military reasons why they have been left so long undisturbed, which the Ministry should have enquired into, as we have more than once pointed out.
