GENERAL SUMMARY.
London, 26th January. Tile Augnst-Nove'rnber mails, via Marseilles, reached London per French steamer on the 9th January, the heavy portion on the 18th, The Queen continues at Osborne in good health, 1 and is beginning to put aside mourning. The Princess of Wales was safely but unexpectedly confined of a son on the Bth January. Mother and child are doing well. Parliament was prorogued on January 13th to the 4th February/ then to meet to discuss important affairs. A petition has been filed in tide !ftv6r£e Court against Lord Palmerston for adultery, the damages are laid at £20,000. Tne Queen has conferred the Victoria Cross on colour-sergeant McKenna and lstnce-corporal Ryan for gallanty in the New Zealand war. Privates Balford and Talboij 65th Regiment, ore notified for the medal. The Rev. Mr. Graham had accepted the pastorate of the Congregational Churchy Pitt-streei;, feydney. The Aborigines' Protection Society gelit a" memorial to Sir G. Grey, entreating him to make peace, but public feeling demands the suppression of the rebellion by force. The Victorian Emigration Society held a meeting on the 15th January, Mr. Childers presiding; The funds in hand are suffieiercrt to send out SUO emigrants. Another fearful colliery explosion with great loss of life, is reported in Wales; The distress in the cotton manufacturing districts is largely increasing. The general feeling in England corresponds with that of Australia on the subject of transportation; It is reported that the P. and 0. Company intend running a fortnightly mail to Australia, via' Galley commencing about August. An undertaking, called the Australian end Eastern Navigation Company, has been formed for the amalgamation of the Black Ball, and Eagle^ and White Star lines of packets, to establish between England and Australia an auxiliary line of powerful steamers in connexion with intercolonial ones. Shares, 3£ premium. Several influential members have seceded from the National Shakespearian Committee. The movement is expected to be a discreditable failure. The Scotch Railways have adopted a plan of heating carriages with hot water, and also lighting them with gas. In less than three years telegrams may be sent to Pekin and back to Paris in one day, by means of the telegraph line now erecting in Eastern Siberia. Heenan's defeat by King has caused great excitement in America. Two new champions, namely, Coburn and Pellitt, challenge King for 10,000 dollars each. Two Buits in the Admiralty Court have been instituted against the Great Eastern. She was offered tor sale by auction, and the highest bid was £50,000. The lottery scheme failed. The Federal cruiser Mohican is in search of the Alabama: She left St. Helena on the 29th December. The Alabama is now cruising off Bombay. The crew of the Golden Eagle, bound to Sydney, mutinied. The ship returned to Liverpool. The Flowery Land) from Singapore to London, was seized by the crew, who murdered captain, mate, and four others, then ran the vessel to the River Plate. All hands have been arrested*
