HOKIANGA.
[Fiom the Southern Cross, May 25.] The following is an oxtract from a piivate letter, dated 7ih May. — " I beg to enclose you my mite (£10) towards the Taranaki Belief Fund. Winter having set in, with its usual boisterous weather, pievents my attempting fuither collection amongst our settlers, who me now few and far botween." "We anxiously await further news fiom the seat of war. The large reinforcement of troops on the way to Taranaki gives hopes of a speedy and satisfactory conclusion." " I am happy to say that Hokianga is quiet, and the Maorics peacefully disposed. A largo meeting of Natives at To Kohu Kohu was held a week ago, all the tiibes on the rivei being lepresentcd by their
respective chiefs. The meeting unanimously condemned Wiremu Kingi's proceedings, and before separating expressed their loyalty by giving three hearty cheers for the Queen." "Captain Cracroft's exploit at the South has given the Natives here the most exalted opinion of the blue-jackets."
