Precisely at a quarter to 2 o'clock the horses drew up to the post, and at the word, given by Mr Brisco Ray, effected an excellent start, tho colt essaying the lead at an easy pace, and rising the hill nearly three lengths a-head. At the dip Higgerson drew up, and at the turn into the straight running gradually closed with the young one, making strong running, and leading past the chair by a neck, the old horse turning the corner a clear length in advance, when Cutts went up for a few strides, but fell off again, making a final but futile push half way up the hill, Gratis going away fiom him just as he pleased and coming into the run in with a powerful inside lead, Cutts had application to the whalebone from the distance, but although the colt ran quite gamely as could t have been expected, his pins could not respond to the demand for an accelerated pace and Higgerson gently shaking the old 'un landed him an easy winner by a length and a half. Time 4 mm. 41 sec. The time is surprisingly slow, but for the first .half it was a mere canter.
