ARRIVAL OF THE "GAZELLE."
[From the New Zealander, Oct. 22.]
Again disappointment. We have been looking for ttvo English Mails — we got, not one. The disarrangement caused to all commercial transactions by this additional delay it is almost impossible to calculate ; and we have a right to ask — where does the fault lie ? Not only are we without home news, home advices, but in the broken files which have come to hand, we see nothing from India. The " Gazelle " left Sydney on the 12th, up to which date the fever about the Filzroy Gold Diggings still continued, but it would seem without any real warrant — at present. Yet already 10,000 persons — nine-tenths utterly inexperienced in the work of gold-digging, — have rushed to that tropical and unhealthy region ! Hundreds more are daily taking their passage thither, with what prospect of profitable result it is not hard to tell. Some extracts we make from the Sydney Herald — an impartial authority — should be read with careful consideration, and more especially the last of its " warnings " against a hasty rush to these new diggings, which we subjoin :-~ Assuming, which is certainly not yet proved, that the gold is in quantities sufficient to pay the experienced digger, we cannot, without concern, see such numbers of persons, utterly unfit for a tropical climate and for the labour and privations of Rockhampton, rush — as it appears to vs — to destruction. In Jtheir case, however, all statements and remonstrances are unavailing. There are times when the public mind seems seized with frenzy, and when all considerations of duty or safety sink before the tyranny of some dominant delusion.
