THE 58th AND INDIA.
[From the New Zealander.] The men of the 58th — long as they have been waiting for orders "for home" — have, we believe, to a man, signified their wish to volunteer roR India. Their desire has been made known to his Excellency, and will be forwarded to the Austialian and Home Military Authorities. What will be the result wo cannot say; but if wanted, "the 58th," both men and officers, are ready — aye ready : Regimental Orders. Auckland, 11th November, 1857. The Commanding Officer has ever had reason to be proud of the Regiment entrusted to his command, but never more so than on the piesent occasion, when, on hearing of the outrages committed on defenceless women and children in India, they have nobly come forward, notwithstanding their long Colonial service, to volunteer at once for the East, and thus contribute their quota to the force sent from the mother country to chastise villains that have proved themselves a disgrace to the human race, and false to the British Throne. The Commanding Officer will not fail to make known, and suppoit, this laudable spirit; at the same time he reminds the men that whatever may be their destination — whether to India, in keeping with their zeal, or Home, as originally airanged — the fust duty of a soldier is cheerful obedience to orders. By order, (Signed) G. J. R. Wynyard, Lieutenant and Adjutant.
