?/e have received our files of the Canterbury papers to the 29th ult., per Nelson, and malic the following extracts :—: — [From the Lyttelton Times, Julj B.] A Provincial Government Gazette, published on the Ist inst., contains tho Census, compiled by ,H. .7. Porter, Esq. of Lytttlton. Tho following eumlonry will bo rend with interest— The grosn population of Canterbury i« given as 35!)5 souls j thtiß divided—males 2196, females 3609. Of, this number 5G5 hnvo been born in Now iJealnnd; The proportions of tho different races composing ihe population is returned as, English, !)290; Scotch, 3H ; Irish, IG2 ; French, 67 ; Genmnm, 24 ; other nations, 38. 21 are returned as •sick nnd infirm.' Of tho gross number, it appears that 2254 can read and write, 442 can read only, und 1078 can neither read nor write ; tho number | of children nt the various schools throughou t the Province, including both public and privato, in returned iift 294. ' Under the bend of " Rank or occupation" 389 are returned aa Gentlemen, Stockowncrg, or Farmer?; 130 ns engaged in mcrcantilo matters or m i mariners ; 227 as mechanics ; and 564 as labourers and servants. The teligious profoision of the inhabitants is thus Bpccificd:— Members of tho Church of England, 3225; Proibytcrians, 291 ( Weslcyann, 190; Roman Catholics, 111 ; Independents, 37 ; Baptists, 1G ; oilier secti, 25. The returns give a total of 7,221 acres fenced in, i,nd the number under crop at 2920, in tho following propoi tioiis ; viz., Wheat, 8!)7 J Barley, 287 ; Oata, 802 ; Maize, 1 ; Potatoes, 3GI ; arlili. i.il grnßß, 289 ; in gardens and orchards, 227 ■ other crop", 143. The stock in the Provineo consists of !>% hoin'f, 20 muleo or ames, 6,3fi3 head of cattlo, 99,245 ehcep, 30C ro.iU, and 4,391 pigs. Another rumour has reached us of gold having been found in the Province ; with tho addition, this tune, of both copper oro and. coal.
