The strikes in the northern districts continued, and Trade Associations in various parts of the kingdom were contiibuting substantial aid. A met ting of 12,000 operatives had been held at Preston on the 20th of November, to reply to statements issued by the mill owners. Despatches from tho Governor of New Zealand had been leceived at the Colonial Office on the 27th of November. The appointment of Sir Charles Hotham to be Lieutenant Governor of Vittoria had been confirmed — at least it was certain that the Duke of Newcastle had offeied it to him, and it was added " we presume there will be little chance of his refusing the offer."

This "fusion" will j have the effect of concentiating the Royalist I paity in France, and may be the fore-run- ' tier of important events. The Duke of Newcastle bad received a deputation of gentlemen inteiested in railway,com muuicat ion between Sydney and Melbourne. His Grace heaid their statements couiteously, pf course, and finally dismissed them with t the diplomatic leply thut " his course in all matters of this kind was to refer the parties to the colony, without expiessing in the fust instance any opinion of his own." The Earl of Eglinton had been plected Lord Rector of Glasgow University, after a contest with Mr. Alfred Tennyson, only decided in favour of his Lordship by the casting vote of the Vice-Rector. The Queen of Portugal — Donna Maria da Gloria — had died in child-birth, on the 15th of Novembei. The Crown devolves on her son Don JPedro, a prince in his 16th year only. The King Consort had assumed the Regency , nnd it was rumoured a rising against him had taken place at Opporto, supported by the 13th regt. , and that Don iVliguel had been proclaimed. In the English Obituary v/ete the names of the Duke of Beaufort, and the Princess Nicholas Esterhazy, eldest daughter of the Earl and Countess of Jersey. The Exodus from Limeiick and other parts of li eland wns going forward with unabated intensity. The Inspector-Gene-ral of Constabulary was taking active steps to check emigrat"'on in the Police force. The Emperor ol China, aecoiding to a statement in a New York paper, had fled to Gehul in Tartary, leaving Prince Wei Chin, fifth brother Taou Kwang, in charge of the Empire, and the insurgents within six days march of Peking. The statement is contained in a letter, dated 3id September, from Dr. Parker, Secretary to the United Stales Legation.
