It ccm|)iises the wholu delta of tlie Irrnwiitli, thu only river f-nn necting the Burmese Enipiie with 'hf ocean. The chief lown< are Rangoon, Bi'ti'iin, and Henzeda. Pegu, its former capit.il, at one time coniaincd 150,000 inhnhitants, but th c trade having been removed to Rangoon, it is now an inconsiderable village. The kingdom of Pegu was conqueied by the Burmese in 1757. It is rich in natural rcsottrccs. It has splendid forests of ilufinest teak timber, which forms its staple export. It exports likewise catechu, wax, Inc, ivory, cotton, gold, gems, poiries ; and even under the present wretched Government the trade amounts in value to about £600,000.
