DELAY OF THE MAIL STEAMER NEBRASKA.
In reference to the non-arrival of the mail steamer, now so long overdue, the Herald of yesterday says:— “The non-arrival of the Nebraska lias cr cited a cr at deal of m e islness i i town, t ear of some serious accident being the predominant feeling. But there is another supposition which would explain the cir cumstance. It is known that Tv! i’ Webb, who was on board, was anxious to arrive at Washington in time to influence the Committee on the Steam Subsidies Bill, ill favour of the Australian and San Francisco line, via New Zealand ; and it is just probable that on his arrival at Honolulu, the connecting boat of the North Pacific was not in port, or was unfit for sea, and that it was imperative to take on the Nebraska. A consideration of all the circumstances would fully justify Dir Webb in such a course of action, and we hope and trust that ibis lias been the case, and that he has succeeded in securing the subsidy for his line.” If such ho the case, which very probably is, there is little likelihood of any mail this month.
