NEW GOLF LINKS FOR GERALDINE CLUB?
QUESTION TO BE CONSIDERED AT GENERAL MEETING. PROFESSIONAL’S REPORT ON SUBJECT. A decision that a general meeting he called to consider the question of establishing new links at Orari, or making improvements to the present course of the club, was arrived at, sit the meeting of the special committee of the Geraldine Golf,Club, set up to consider the matter, when it reviewed the report, of the. professional (Mr G. B. Forrest) on Wednesday evening.* There were present Messrs A. A. Readdie (president), P. G. Withers, J. D. McKechnie, ,A. C. Bennett, D. Macdonald, M. Campbell, J. S. Barker, Dr. G. W. Curtis, and D. J.
Lack (secretary). .Mr Forrest’s report was as follows: “I inspected the present course first. Some of the holes are quite interesting, although on the short side, but the approaches to the greens as they are at present are quite impossible to play with any certainty. This, of course, can be overcome and levelled up, as I explained to the gentleman who accompanied me round. It would need levelling up at least 20 yards from the green, and the banks on the approach side would need to be made so that a run-up shot would not hit a depression and come back, for there is nothing more annoying to play a well-hit run-up and then to see it come back, and on the course the greens are too short for pitching.
"In regard to the other ground, there were great possibilities with the amount of ground available, and a good nine holes of approximately 3000 yards could be laid down. The ground has depressions, etc., where holes can be made, having some feature. With regard to the fairways, very little will have to be done there, as there is no undergrowth. Once the long grass dies down or has been cut, it will be fit to, play on straight away, and by what I saw, the lies will be very fair. The ground is very similar to the Pleasant Point links. "Greens. Suitable places for greens can he got anywhere, as the ground is Hat, and no cutting-out would have to be done. All that would he required is a light topdressing and seed. This could bo done very easily at about 30s per green. "Tees. —The ground again is in favour, and no tees would have to be built up, so that the cost would be very little. "Length of boles. —With regard to the long til of holes, which I think could he laid down, 1 suggest as follows:
