NATIVE LAND COURT.

SITTING IN TEMUKA. The Native Land Court, presided over by Judge Gilfedder, has been sitting in Temuka during the week, and concluded late yesterday afternoon. Amongst the business transacted was the following;— Applications for succession to Tiaki Peneaming were dealt with, there being quite a number of valuable interests involved. Trustees for the minor beneficiaries were appointed, they being Joseph Heath and Andrew Wixon. After much discussion they were removed, and the Native Trustee appointed. There were quite a. number of other applications for succession, and the most important were: — Keita Torepe (deceased), Hamura Torepe (deceased), Punaomaru and Kihi, Jenny Gibbs, Jimmy Mclntosh, Robert Mclntosh. There were two exchanges, the pieces of land involved being Kaiaroi .94, and Kaiapoi 35. The administration of the estate of John Beaton, of Kaikoura, was adjourned to the next sitting of the Court at Kaiapoi.

The partition of Waihao Section 8 was also adjourned to Kaiapoi. Much evidence was taken in respect of an application for the removal of Pani Torepe as trustee for her aged mother. Applicants alleged that Pani was misusing her mother’s money. After enquiring into the merits of the case, the Court decided to leave Pani as trustee for another twelve months, and if it was then shown that she was not a fit person to act as such, then the Court would take steps to have her removed. In the meantime, Miss Hannah Bremner, school teacher, was to receive all monies on the aged woman’s behalf, and the Court decided that the trustee should apply to her for such. The Runanga. balance-sheet was handed into Court by Mr Norman Waaka, for perusal. There is a balance of £22 4s 2d, and same was certified by the auditor. It was shown that £ll7 17s 10d was spent on the Pah during the past twelve months. On Thursday the Native Land Board sat, with Mr Gilfedder as president. Quite a number of properties were reported as having been sold by the Natives to European buyers, Mr A. W. Douglass being the principal purchaser. The sales were approved. Several applications were made for orders of payment of certain sums on the Board and the Native Trustee, for minors, in respect of monies held in trust. Five were granted.
