GIRL GUIDES.

GERALDINE TROOP. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Girl Guides was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs G. A. Macdonald presiding over a fair attendance. Prior to taking the business of the meeting, a vote of sympathy was passed with the Misses Hughes, in the loss they had sustained in the death of their mother. All present stood in silence. The various reports, giving a resume of the year’s work, were read. The balance-sheet showed receipts £47 8s Bd, the proceeds of the tennis tournament and entertainment accounting for £2O Is 3d, and annual subscriptions for £ll 3s. The chief items of expenditure were 3 5 hats £9 12s 6d, belts £4 13s 6d, camping tent £4 10s, leaving a balance in hand of £l4 9s 9d. The president complimented the Guides on the excellent reports. They were becoming most efficient, having already one company of 30 Guides, and they were now ready to enrol another company. They would all agree that very satisfactory progress had been made, and the balance was also very good. She had much pleasure in moving the adoption of the reports and balancesheet. This was seconded and carried unanimously. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs Holdgate; vice-presidents. Mrs Macdonald and Mrs W. A. Sherratt; secretary, Miss E. Parr; treasurer, Miss de Latour; committee, same as last year, with the addition of Mrs Burdon, Mrs Sharpe and Mrs Cooling, from Woodbury. Mrs Macdonald said she wished to thank the Presbyterian Hall Committee for the use of the Church Hall, and the Anglican Church for the use of the Parish Hall. She also wished to thank Mrs Ulrich for coming out and enrolling the company, and Mrs L. Williams for getting up the entertainment which had added over £2O to their funds; and the tennis authorities for their help. She also wished to thank all others who had helped. MRS HAROLD’S ADDRESS. At the conclusion of the business of the meeting, the president introduced Mrs Harold, of Ashburton, to the meeting, stating that that lady would address them on Guide matters. Mrs Harold was greeted with applause. She congratulated the company on its report and balancesheet, which were very good. She then gave an interesting address on the aims and objects of the Girl Guide movement, stressing the fact that the leaders should see that the enthusiasm was maintained and the machinery kept in good order and well oiled. She hoped that soon Geraldine would have a second company. The aims and ideals of the movement, the speaker said, were to make women good citizens, good home-makers, and good mothers. They should aim to develop the very highest ideals in the girls by drawing out the best that was in them, and this was best done by training . a girl on the lines she liked best and which made her happy and : bright. Mrs Harold’s address was followed with interest, and when Mrs Macdonald voiced their appreciation of her kindness in having come down ■ from Ashburton to be with them, a : vote of thanks was accorded the , speaker by acclamation. After the meeting, afternoon tea- ■ was handed round, and was much j enjoyed. '
