WAIMATE ASSOCIATION’S. TOURNAMENT. CLEVERLEY DEFEATS CAMPBELL. (Special Correspondent.) The star bout between Cleverley and Campbell was certainly worth going far to see —and many of the audience did come from a -distance, some a great distance. The bout was decidedly willing, and though there were a good many clinches, it was for the most part open and clean. The evenness of the match may be judged from the fact that Cleverley was the winner by only half a point. The boxers were given a great ovation at the conclusion of the fight, ami the decision was well received. Alan Campbell (Oamaru) 12-7 v Alf. Cleverley (Wellington) 11-11. First Round —Cleverley started with a left to the head and there was a quick exchange. Cleverley connected a right and Campbell landed left to jaw and right to body. Infighting'. Campbell short jabbed and Cleverley got in good right and left to body. Campbell forced Cleverley to ropes. Cleverley connected right to body and Campbell a straight left to jaw followed by a right. Second Round—Campbell led left and right to head and Cleverley fought back, landing left to the ribs. Third Round —Campbell started stronglv. Cleverley connected light rigid to the jaw and straight left to face. Campbell landed left to face and clinched. Campbell connected straight left to face, Cleverley retaliated will) right i<> face. Cleverley sharply jabbed to ear, Campbell returning with left to no'-e, Cleverley also connected a jab to nose, and Campbell gave left to ear. Cleverley connected a hard leit to ear. iFourth Round —Following Minch, Cleverley connected right I" nose. From more infighting, Campbell gave a left to solar plexus while Cleverley made Campbell's right ear his mark. Campbell nose was bleeding. Campbell put a solid left to stomach and also hard left to nose. Clevcrlev succeeded with a right to ear, Campbell retaliating with punches to the face.
