The Postmaster at Temuka (Mr ■W. Baxter) reports that the best postal despatch to Great Britain and the Continent of Europe closes at Christchurch to-morrow (Wednesday), December 19, at 5 p.m. (per Maunganui at Wellington), Correspondence must be addressed ■"via Australia.”
About 100 Girl Guides from St. Mary’s Timaru, intend camping in the Domain at Winchester, between .Christmas and New Year. ‘•Yesterday being the anniversary day of the Province, the banks at Geraldine were closed.
The Young Helpers’ -League party which' was to have been held in the Geraldine Domain on Saturday, was postponed to next Thursday, when Miss A. Hughes and Miss Morrison will entertain the children. ’ The final of the Temuka Milliards tournament was completed last evening; when Bert Cameron beat Geo. Phillips by 300 to 225, M. McGillen and George Phillips have yet to play off to decide the winner ®f the second and third prizes. of Mr Claude Harrison’s furniture at No. 33 Birkett street, Temuka, on Thursday,' commencing at 1.30. A carol service was held at the Geraldine Presbyterian Church oh Sunday evening. The Rev. J. Coaling 1 preached, and after the ordinary service, the carols were sung, Mrs A. McKenzie (nee Miss Jean Gillies), Mrs Scott, and the Misses Crolnbie, Moncur, Cruickshank, and Mr Nicoll taking part in the soli and duets.
-At the Temuka Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr A. Lowrie, J.P., presiding, William Peter McGillen was charged with drunkenness and with behaving in a disorderly manner in a public street, on Saturday last. Sergeant Dwau, who prosecuted, stated l.lillf the defendant was 'on bail of .02. Defendant did not appear, Constable South worth said that a’man who was partially paralysed had got down on the pavement in front of an hotel, and while assisting him to his feel, defendant struck witness, and latterly became'more abusive and had to he arrested. He was drunk. No vehicle was available, and he had to be dragged to the lock-up.- Defendant was convicted and fined the amount of his bail.
