AGAIN! THAT SLOGAN.
. To the Editor.,. Sir.—On reading the-letters on this subject oiie 4s &thich‘‘ by - ' the fact that the' : writers 'all ; seem to blame each other • that -in citieising the adopted slogan they do ; not ■ suggest’ an .alternative one. The- difficulty seems to be , in finding an adjective wjith the sound in' it, -to harmonise With the 1 word , “TenuikaV” In . Which ! - connection I am reminded of a remark 1 heard many -years ago in the main street here.—T 1 \yas waiting ■ outside -.a shop ,dobr one 'summer- evening" when ,;a little girl, evidently a 'Visitor, pushing d pram accosted another .similarly'-engaged/ and ' casting a toot of profound appreciation all around her exclaimed: “I say Sal’, ain’t it bosker in Teniuka”.— Although the remark Was certainly ungrammatical, - yet the apthess andthe euphony of the weirds stuck- in my niind and the present-controv-ersy brought them back to me. Why not use the' word “Bosker”? ;I looked it up in the dictionary not. expecting to Hind the very word there, but on the chance of discovering’ its derivation, and found it was evidently derived from “Boscage”—ihi state of being covered with leafy Miager.” Well! I thought to myself, this brings in our”wonderful the spelling has suffered slightly. Why not let ns alteiT.lt g''l|ttle bit more and convert it to ojir own use thus, as a slogan —“T ( emuka ka, Boska Temuka.” That sounds more like a rallying, cry than • ‘‘Choose Charming Te--mukad’ You can use it as a slogan or as a toast. You could call the cows home with it at night or yoiu Maori friends .could use it for a, haka—in fact there ure a hundred and, one things an able bodied man could, do 'with a slogan like that. It posesses the charm of brevity and more than a hint of humour. Whitt do you think of it . —I am, etc., , - i “TOMATO
