ANNUAL SCHOOL PICNICS.

AT CAROLINE BAY. BATHING AND SPORTS. ' TEMUKA DISTRICT HIGH 1 SCHOOL. The picnickers to the Annual Temuka. District High School picnic at Caroline Bay on' Thursday were favoured with line weather, 060 adults and children proceeding by special train to. Timaru, while a. large number ,went by motor car, making the attendance at about 1100. For the first- hour at the delightful seaside resort, bathing and paddling by the children were indulged in, and at eleven the crowd assembled for lolly scrambles, and there were races for all ages, and then races for the different standards. Races were also held for married arid single ladies and married and single men, the committee acting as judges, with Mr Malcolm as starter and liandi-, capper, assisted by -Messrs Snliarf. and Cartwright. 'Trophies for thedifferent events were kindly donated by various gentlemen of the town: - After lunch the day became much warmer, and hundreds found thenway into the sea, whilst others spent their time on the tennis court and the children made full use of the swings and", anerry-go-rounds, etc. Towards evening a strong sou'-easter set in, which soon in-?-creased to a gale compelling the picnickers to leave for the train, but throughout: the ;day( a most; enjoyable time was spent by both young and old, the. picnic proving in every way a huge success. [GERALDINE _; DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

"The annual picnic of tho ; Geraldine School wiiich was postponed from last week on account of the wet'weather, look place on Thursday last, and proved a great success, over 350 children and parents making the journey to the seaport hy motor bus and train. The Committee had made very complete arrangements for transporting the; children to and from Orari Rail : way Station and everything went off without a hitch. The weather was all that could he desired, the day proving an ideal one up to 4.30 when a cold dry southerly made itself felt. As the children were getting ready to leave for home,, this did not interfere AVith their enjoyment to any great extent, and' all agreed; that the outing' had been a very, enjoyable'..one. ' Sea bathing proved the great attraction for the young people, the greater number of whom spent a long time in the water. A large number also went over 'the". iCommonwealth and Dominion liner Port' Campbell which was loading meat at No. 3 wharf, and by the courtesy of its captain and officers were given every facility for seeing the whole vessel. . /This was greatly .appreciated; by .the, chjildr ren and the Committee. Hot water and , milk were provided by the Timaru Borough Council and this was a great convenience, and. the Committee feel grateful for this attention. Year by year the attractions..of the Bay are increasing, due in a. great measure to the line growth of the shrubs and: trees which now afford, a welcome shelter. Only a matter of ten years ago the lack of shade on hot days was a great drawback to a day on the Bay, but it has now become quite an ideal picnic ground, and well deserves to be called the playground of South Canterbury. The children arrived home tired but happy, at about half past six. .
