THE TURF.

AMBERLEY RACING CLUB. At the Amberley Racing Club’s annual race meeting, held on the Riccarton course on Saturday, there was an attendance 1 much above expectations. The Brackenfield HighWeight Handicap fell to Sayonara, with Kilris second and Gay Life third. The winner was almost the extreme outsider of the field, and in consequence returned a good'dividend. Serotina and Cultivation filled the places In the Novice Stakes,■: the.. much-fancied Zarisee' being beaten out of a place. The

Amberley Cup produced a good contest, the Sarto gelding Freeco, with Emerson in the: saddle, just beating The. Harp by a neck, Deucalion occupying third' place, a head in front of the fastifinishing r Tarleton. The harness trot wae won by His Pal, with Great Form and Kibiringi in the other ’places. - The West Coaster Booster, prevailed in the Seadown Handicap, Will Oakland being second and Ferine" third. Serotina, who has been racing very consistently of late, won the Glasnevin Hack Race, Lytup and Galcite filling the minor and the Bloomfield Welter fell lo another West Coaster in Para, with Ophir second and Kuia third. The last event, the Teyiotdale Trot, was won by Nagol Pointer, with Lord Clan second and Searchlight Lad third.

(Notes by “Carbine.") The meeting proved in more than one case how uncertain the racing game is> At Timaru the-Racecourse Hill filly : was the last to get away in her . race on' the second, flay, but coming round the field could not be held slow enough to finish an easy first. On Saturday,; with , the North Island champion .apprentice, T. Green, in the saddle, ehe was hardly ever sighted. .. i , Kilris.; ran Carnot: to a. .nose on the first day at Timara, and there .are many sports now who hold to their opinion that; the daughter of Kilboy “just- got::there, V but the man in the box is the best one to judge, perhaps, after all. On the -second day she .again 'failed to be returned the. actual winner,, the result being given as a dead heat between her and Buoyant,, “Carbine,” who was right opposite the line when the hprsee flashed past, is quite confident that the judge’s placing was perfectly correct. At Amberley on Saturday she again suffered defeat in her only start, so she muet be branded as having ■been born under an amlucky star. It is reported that Fresco is to undergo a special preparation for the New Zealand Cup, .The gelding should be in the Bst. division, and if he stands up . to a preparation, may be expected to give a good account of himself. .
