PEER STALKING. The Al'bury fallow deer herd continues to provide good sport, and licenses are being issued as usual for the forthcoming season. OPOSSUMS. No licenses were issued last" season, your Council having decided that these mammals be protected for one year. Licenses will again be available for the doming season, in due course. (GAME SHOOTING. The season last year was opened for the months of May, June and. July, during which Grey Duck, Black Teal, Spoonbill and Black Swans were permitted to he shot. In addition Paradise Duck were allowed to be taken in the Mackenzie County during the first seven, days. The shooting, broadly speaking, was not good, although several fair bags were reported from private dams. Similar provisions have been made for the 1926 season, and licenses may be obtained from the usual agents. BLACK SHAGS. The Council is continuing it© policy of encouraging the destruction of these birds, which take such a heavy toll of the trout in the rivers. A reference to the annual accounts shows a considerable decrease in the amount paid out for this purpose, This is regrettable, and it Is hoped that sportsmen will lose no opportunity for carrying out this very'necessary work. The Council is at all 1 times prepared to encourage this work in a tangible manner. PHEASANTS. A stock of forty pheasants was procured from Auckland and distributed amongst interested farmers, who report varying success in the rearing of young birds. Messrs Biedee and Grant were most successful, they having raised over 150 bird®, and the success of these gentlemen demonstrates that pheasants can be successfully reared in this district. It is hoped to extend the scope of this experiment, and applications for settings of eggs or pens of stock birds will be welcomed. (Although it may be many years before these birds are sufficiently numerous to justify an experimental open season, it is hoped that this will eventually result, and. the Society is indebted to those sportsmen who are so enthusiastically working for this end. BITTERNS. Sportsmen are again asked to note that bitterns are absolutely protected in this district. Several bird© have been noticed recently and reports seem to indicate a slight increase in. the number seen. GAME SANCTUARY. The game in the Sanctuary are making good progress, four brood© of young grey ducks being seen there during the last breeding season. ,A pair of white swans Was procured for theWellington Zoological Gardens. Pukaki were d'onatedi by Mrs Ackroyd, of Waitohi, and Mr A. Bain, and muscovy ducks were given by Mr W. Oldfield and Mr A. J. Black. These, with the black swans and paradise ducks secured in the Mackenzie Country by the Ranger, have been a splendid draw for the native game, which apparently appreciate the haven of rest which has Been provided. With the assistance of Mr J. Oliver, the Sanctuary was last winter planted with flax and toi-toi. Mr Oliver has reared a number of grey, duck, for which he is also due the thanks of the Council. POACHING. Very few cases of poaching have been reported and detected during the year under review, and it is considered that offences of this nature are now at a minimum. A word of thanks should here be given to the Honorary Rangers, who undoubtedly assist in the prevention of breaches of the regulations by their vigilance and co-operation with the Society’s Ranger. Licenseholder© also given invaluable assistance in this respect. All cases weie given careful consideration, and where necessary legal action was taken. RAINE MEMORIAL ESSAYS.
