THE Temuka Leader SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1924.

There will be no publication of this paper on Christmas Day. To-morrow’s services of the various churches will be found on reference to our advertising columns. To-day is the last day for ordering any of our fine art series of Christmas and New Year greeting cards. See advertisement. Two first offenders were -convicted and discharged before Mr A. R. Lawry, J.P., at the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. An advertisement of thanks from the Temuka Band appears in our advertising columns. Thirty-two tourists who are making a 1000 mile tour, will stay at the Crown Hotel when passing through Temuka on January 2nd. The Temuka Municipal Band will play on the streets of Temuka on Christmas Eve, and. will also play at Geraldine on New Year’s Eve. prior to their carolling the town and surrounding districts. “Sit down that little girl; you have been standing up a lot,” said Mr Malcolm to one of the pupils at the prize-giving ceremony yesterday, who was evidently one who liked the limelight. “But,” said the chairman in a voice from behind, “she has a pretty dress on.” The police received a call to Orari yesterday where some trouble had arisen on an excursion train bound for Ashburton. It appears things became interesting to the extent of broken windows in some of the carriages, the result of some scuffling, not to call it fighting. However, the train moved off just as Sergeant Dwan and Constable O’Connor arrived, -and all appeared to be quiet again. The Geraldine County Council notifies that the head office at Geraldine will be closed from December 25th to 27th, and from January Ist to 3rd inclusive, for (ho Christmas and New Year holidays The Engineer’s office at Temuka will be closed from December 24th to January 19th. The programme of selections from Handel’s Messiah, to be rendered by the Combined Choir and Orchestra in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall on Monday evening, promises to be a great success. Gopd work has been put into the practices, and no pains Ijave been spared by the conductor, Mr Naylor, to bring his team up to concert pitch. All that is needed to complete the success is. a good audience which should be assured, given fine weather. A collection will be taken up to cover expenses. Lovers of Ethel M. Dell’s stories will enjoy the screen version of her famous novel, “The Eleventh Hour,” to be screened at Temuka to-night. Some of the most beautiful iand pictuiresque spots on the river Thames are contained in this English production. The picture was filmed round about Henley, and a fierce thunderstorm, common to that district, happens at a crucial moment when the heroine is about to run away from her husband. Madge White and Denis Wyndham have the leading parts. The supporting films are also good, and include a Gazette, a Scenic in which harpoon fishing Is shown, and a Larry Semon comedy entitled “Horseshoes.” The "Dorothy” have a pretty little mascot that calls in for afternoon tea every day. He is- a tame , little sp(arrow, evidently attracted by, the tasty crumbs lie discovered were to be found at this period of the day, and further encouraged by the ladies offering him additional prizes as a reward for his display .of confidence in the goodness which, after all is said and done, is latent dn human nature, and more often than not, as in this case, only requires the opportunity to display itself towards the feathered tribe, though the farmer and gardener (are always voting him a pest. New potatoes and green peas arc absolutely essential to adorn the dinner table and tickle the palate on Christmas Day, You may have them if you go to F. Smith’s. See advertisement.
