He then asked 1 Mrs Hayhurst to make the presen- 1 tation.
“May you spend many happy days Hinder the warm covering of this eiderdown,” said Mrs Hayhu'rst, in making the presentation. It was perhaps not the most suitable present for this season of the year, but judging by the recent weather, providence had made the weather cool that Miss Phillips might enjoy its comfort.
Mr Ellis then read the following letter: To Miss Phillips—Your long association with the activities of the Navy League i-n this district in the conduction of its meetings suggested to its members that they would like to make 'some small acknowledgment to you of their appreciation of your efforts for its welfare. We would ask your acceptance of the accompanying gift as a token of their goodwill and -kindly feeling to, yon. The committee, on behalf of its members, trust you will accept it with the utmost good wishes of tl)e members of the Navy League.—With kind regards, we are, yours very truly, John J. Ellis (president), Alfred Mathews (lion, secretary), Teniuka Navy League. Mr C. E. Bremner endorsed the remarks of Mr Ellis. Miss Phillips had on all occasions presided as honorary secretary, and had carried out her duties capably. She bad given a strong lead in all the work of the League. When entertaining visitors • Miss Phillips had been a capable leader and of great assistance in connection with all Navy League work. Messrs Smart and Hughes also paid warm tributes to Miss Phillips In reply, Miss Phillips warmly thanked all for their kind expressions and assured them she appreciated the thoughts which prompted them to give so beautiful a present. The work of secretary was a difficult one, entailing reading of papers both Jiero and abroad to keep in touch with the Navy League movement. One reward was in being present at the big functions, which made the position one to be proud of.
