SHEARING CLASS.

PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION. At Mr S. McCully’s wool shed, Milford, on Saturday afternoon, nine pupils of the Temuka Technical Shearing Class gave a demonstration of shearing. Visitors were present from Milford, Clandeboye, Winchester, Seadown and Temuka. The class was started on October 22nd under the tutorship of Mr Wm. Goodman, an expert shearer who carried out his duties in an eminently satifactory manner. Fully 1600 sheep have been shorn this year, the owners being Messrs D. Sco.tt, G. B. Cartwright, J. N. Taylor, W. Philips, Arthur Davey, G. Brown (Orari), G. Ward, S. Trumper, S. McCully, and M. Guild, the last named on two occasions placing his shed at the disposal of the Board. Excellent work has been accomplished by the pupils and very favourable comment was made on the work by visitors. The success of the class has been largely due to the kindness of Mr and Mrs McCully, and the Technical School Board are greatly indebted to them as well as the Farmers’ and Sheepowners’ Union and the owners of the sheep given for the work, without which the class could not have been run. The demonstration commenced at 2 o’clock, shearing and fleece rolling opening the proceedings. A lesson in machine shearing followed by the kind permission of Mr McCully, and later those present were entertained to tea by Mrs McCully, assisted by Miss McCully and others.

After apologising for the absence of Mr G. B. Cartwright, chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr J. T. Smart, director of the Technical Classes, gave the pupils some practical advice, mentioning (that blade shearing was essential. The Farmers’ and Sheepowners’ Union only supported blade classes. It was quite likely that when the classes finished, which would probably be next Tuesday, the boys would be able to get shearing work. He thanked those who had assisted in carrying on the class, and called for cheers for Mr and Mrs McCully. Mr G. J. Pemberton endorsed the remarks of Mr Smart, and referred to/ the sulmptuous lunches provided for the men by Mrs McCully, and to Mr McCully’s efforts on behalf of the class. He also referred) to Mr Smart’s good work, and then called for cheers for both gentlemen, which were suitably acknowledged by Mr Smart and Mr McCully.
