THE GAMING BILL.
SEVERAL NECESSARY AMENDMENTS. HON. E. W. ALISON’S VIEWS. Reference to the Gaming Bill which was introduced into Parliament recently was made by the Hon. E. W, Alison in the course of his remarks when moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet at the annual meeting of the Taka-puna Jockey Club-.' “As •members are aware, a Gaming Amendment Bill has been introduced by the Government during this session of Parliament,” said Mr Alison, ‘ and whilst there are manifest indications that the measure will not get an uninterrupted passage, it is to bo hoped that several needed amendments in the existing law will be made. No reasonable argument can be advanced in favour of the restriction with reference to the non-publication of dividends nor of the right of individuals to remit investments to clubs on race days. The legalising of the use of the double totalisator should also be provided. Then again, seeing the large number of entries for some races, and the consistently large number of runners, provision should be made to run races when •necessary in divisions, so as to ensure safety. to riders and competitors. mid a fair run to the public and horse owners.”
