ITEMS OF INTEREST. Monday wss ]the last day on which the special discount of 5 per cent, was given on the Borough rates. The total ijates are in the vicinity of £3600, and the amount collected up to and including Monday was £2027. This represents a sum of just over £IOO being given in discounts.

A fancy dress dance will be held in the Catholic Club Rooms, Tomuka, on Tuesday, August 10 lb next. Good prizes are being offered for the best ladies’ and gentlemen’s fancy costume, and this, together with the additional attraction of excellent music, should ensure of an enjoyable evening being spent. On Tuesday afternoon the Mayor (Mr T. Gunniioii), the Town Clerk (Mr E. B. Cooper), the Curator ol the Domain (Mr J. A. Macdonald)

and Mr J. Main (ranger to the Acclimatisation Society) inspected the section of the Domain to he laid out for the bird sanctuary, and arrangements were made to proceed with the preliminary work at once. To-night the annuial ball of the Temuka Druids’ Lodge will be held in the Drill Hall. Special attention is being paid to the decorations and the catering, while a feature of the evening will be the music, Campbell’s Timaru orchestra having been engaged. In connection with the Druids’ annual ball to be held in the Drill Hall to-night, a torchlight procession will be held, the members of the Lodge marching in full regalia. The procession, which will be headed by the Temuka Pipe Band, and which will also contain a decorated lorry, will start off from the Bands’ Hall, Denmark street, 'at 7.30 p.m. and will inarch down Studholme street, along High street, turning into Railway Terrace. Prom the last-named thorou'ghfare the procession will march into Wood street, and so into King street, and finally down that street to the Drill Hall. As announced in last ssue the entertainment given, by the Arowhenua Maori Concert Party in the Dominion Theatre on Monday night (to assist the parish in the erection of a new church lat the Pa), was a conspicuous success in every way. The entertainment was of a distinctly pleasing nature, and revealed much hard work on the part of the respective performers. Songs were given by Miss Rehu, Mesdames Taipana, J. Rehu, K. Rehu and W. Rickus, and Messrs T. Rickms, K. Rehu, J. Rehu and C. Taipana. Every .item was encored. A clever impersonation of Harry Lauder earned Mr A. Wixon hearty appljanse. Pleasing variety was lent to the programme hy a number of hakas, pois and canoe songs, all of which were heartily encored, 'and a clever sketch entitled “My Wandering Boy,” in which the whole company took part, concluded an exceptionally fine entertainment. Miss Hopkinson and Mr Barrett, who acted as accompanists, contributed greatly to the success of the evening. -The company very much appreciated the valuable assistance given hy the manager of the Picture Co., Mr R.
