WINCHESTER.
CONCERT BY TEMUKA MAORIS! The Maoris of Temuka, in charge of Mr Wiremu Torepe, visited Winchester on Friday evening to assist at a social in aid of* the Sunday School Extension Fund. There was a large attendance, many being unable to find seating accommodation. The programme was in the hands of the Maoris, and encores were ■ numerous. Mr ,C. Taipana made an excellent stage, manager. - ; The first item was a Maori chorus by Mr Torepe’is Troulpe, and was a great aucess. A song by. Mrs Looker was well received. A double poi dance by the Maori ladies with. Miss Alice Hopkinson as leader was, encored, as was a duet by . Misses, Amokura Torepe and Milly Paiki. A haka chorus by the Maori ladies was well received. Songs by Miss Mattie Rehu and Mr A. Wixon were encored. A splendid recitation by Milly Paiki was loudly applauded. Songs by Mrs J . Rehu and Mr DToa met with a clamorous rega.ll. One of the best itexns of the eventing was Waka poi by the Maori ladies.
The last number, “God be With You till we Meet Again,” was very appropriate. The accompaniments were played by Miss Milly Hopkin r son and Mr S. Torepe. Mr Torepe also supplied the dance music. Mr ,L. H. Orbell, on behalf of the St. John’s Sunday School, returned thanks to Mr Torepe and his troupe for coming that evening. He said the people of Winchester had been waiting a long time to hear the Maoris. They had • given a splendid evening’s amusement and he hoped that it would not be the last time they would do so. Mr Orbell said that two years ago the Vestry started with socials and euchre parties to/raLse„:funds to add a*- extension • t6''€he ; Sunday and;'with the help ; they’ had’ from, 'iheir Maori friends .they would- be able to commence building at once. Mr Orbell also, thanked Mr. Torepe for a donation he , had received from him. He also thanked Mr Sam Tonepe for his services as musician for the dancing. (Applause).
Mr C. Taipana replied on behalf of- Mr. Torepe and the Maoris. He said they were only 100 pleased to conife that evening. If at any time their services were required for any socials in connection with the Church and Sunday School, they would bo only too willing to , come and help. He . said they had had'a good time that evening,- one that they* would not soon fotget! (Applause).. Extras, ./or the dancing , were played by vMrs C. Taipana, Misses Milly Hopkinson, and Hipe Bari'ett,' and Mr H. Gillum. Messrs J. Philp and.jl Cripps made efficient M.G/s. The money taken at the door amqunted to £B.
