The Irish envoys, speaking at Richmond, Victoria, said the Free State was being kept alive by force, and' so long as it possessed big guns,
little guns would remain in the hands of the Republicans. Father O’Kelly said he despised the clamour for deportation of himself and Father O’Flanagan: also the attack by the Catholic newspaper, which allied itself with the Orange Lodge and the Protestant Federation. A Tiflis'message states that a lire destroyed one of the immense warehouses of the Near East relief organisation at Alcxandropol, where 10,000 Armenian children are being housed. The largest orphanage in the world and jseveral orphanage buildings were endangered: but n bucket brigade of 2000 children was organised by an American nurse and kept back the flames. They were assisted by m battalion of Bolshevik soldiers.
At the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Hockey Association, the election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr G. P. Wood (re-el-ected); vice-presidents—Messrs J. Anderson (Orari), H. Herlihy (Geraldine), and A. G. Hamilton (Tiiu•aru): lion, secretary, Mr L. A. Bowden (re-elected; hon. treasurer, Mr W. Ramsay (re-elected): hon. auditor, Mr G. W, Leslie (re-elect-ed) : delegate to N. Z. H. A., Mr F. Oracle,. Christchurch (re-elected); delegate to N.Z.L.H.A., Miss L. Dick, Wellington (re-elected; Management Committee—Messrs Good-
man, Voss, Mcßae, Somerville, Stead and Pickering subject to thoir respective clubs appointing them as delegates to the Association. Lady delegates appointed were Misses Meldrum, Tizard, and Henderson. Government publications of the various countries are named ‘‘blue books,” ‘‘white, books,” etc., from the colour of their covers.
A gasometer with a capacity of 7,000,000 cubic feet—said to be the largest in the world—is being built at Belfast, Ireland. Originally founded for white troops only, the Victoria Cross has been open to Indian soldiers since 1911, and to women since 1020. The Red Cross Society in 191 S had over 300 0 detachments, with a personnel of more than 90,000, of whom 6 0,00 0 were women. At a marriage ceremony in India, the bride stands on a large plate Ailed with milk and rose-coloured sweet-meats. London's Fire Brigade had its last horsed turn-out on November 24, 1921. The brigade was formed in ’ 1833. Education in Great Britain cost AM 16s 6cl annually per child in 1913 but in 1922 this had 'risen To £l2 7s Cd.
