HOCKEY.

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH.

SOUTH CANTERBURY v. OTAGO,

The above representative teams met on the Caledonian Grounds at Dunedin on Saturday. Heavy rain fell in the night, and although the day was fine, the ground was wet and I heavy, making anything like accurate play impossible. The visitors well held their own during the first spell, though they had the bad fortune to sustain two casualties, Rennett and Maitland meeting with accidents. The first named had to retire and was replaced by Fronting, and Maitland through his injury was mere or less of a passenger during the second spell, though he pluckily played on. There was no score up to half time, but in the second spell the home team put on six goals, the muddy ground not suiting the style of play of the visitors. Still the game was more even than the difference in the scores would seem to indicate. Messrs Mitchell and Herlihy were referees.
