On Wednesday, Mr T. I), Burnett, M.P., asked I lie Minister of Education a question regarding (lie conveyance of school children on the railways, when going to the towns for dental treatment. The annual concert of St. Peter’s Sunday School will be held on Friday, September Ist. At the Salvation Array Hail, Geraldine on Sunday evening, the service will be a memorial one to the late Brother R. Russell. All are invited to be present. H. Fenn in another column, and to be sold in his rooms at 7.30 this evening. Mr Graham, the officer appointed to act as Clerk of the Court at Temuka, entered upon his duties last Tuesday. Mr Graham is assistant in the office of the Temuka Court, and will visit Temuka periodically. The Rev. J. Dawson Madill will preach at the Presbyterian Church, Geraldine, to-morrow. He will lake for his subject at the morning service “Our Duty to Our Fellowmen, ’ and at the evening service “Ameliorating Grace.” Service will lie held at Woodbury in the aft wnoon. y The programmes which were distributed among the large number of people at the Domain on Thursday in connection with the War Memorial were executed at the “Leader” office, and were turned out in a manner which reflected much credit on the office itself and the staff connected with the printing of them. The Temuka Caledonian Society’s grand annual plain and fancy dress hall will be held in the Drill Hall, Temuka, on Thursday next, 17th inst. For years past this function has been recognised as the hall of the season, and this year everything possible is being donl to maintain that high standard of excellence. Special attention is again being given to decorations and combined with good music and fast floor, and first-class supper should result in a brilliant success. Popular prices have been fixed to meet the times, and it is understood that quite a large number of fancy dresses will be in evidence. A record attendance is expected. The High Commissioner in London has secured for' exhibition throughout New Zealand, with a special eye to its being shown for the benefit of schools, copies of a film prepared by the Vermin Repression Society showing various phases of the life of the rat, different ways in which it is a nuisance and a danger to mankind, and a variety of traps and devices for catching rats all pictured in action. A Wellington newspaper says the film, which has been passed by the Censor, is one of the most marvellous studies of natural history that has appeared iii the Dominion.

The price to be charged by the Government for electricity avus the subject of a question in the House ou Friday. The Minister of Public Works replied that the standard charges made by the Government for power in hulk would Be £lO per unit per annum for the first 2000 kilo.watts, and £7 over that point. When 15,000 kilowatts was reached there could be a separate contract with a further drop, reaching to £5 per unit, when 20,000 kilowatts was taken. It was for the Power Board to fix the price to farmers. This was subject *o a maximum by regulation,. but the minimum could be anything. A particularly fine magazine, that presents the best of the world’s humour in art and literature, has just reached us. It is entitled “Humour,” and it is well named, providing as it does, a laugh in every inch of space. "Humour” gathers its matter - from all the famous witty papers of the world, including London "Punch,” “PassingShow,” “Tit-Bits,” “-Pearson’s Weekly.” “London Opinion,” “Sketch,” “Weekly Telegraph,” and others. Other countries whose artists and writers are represented in “Humour” are. Italy, Spain, and •Norway. No better way could he imagined of bringing Australasian readers in touch with the humour of the world, for in a single magazine is presented the cream of the wit from all the publications mentioned. “Humour” is published on the 7th and 21st of the month, and is on sale at 3d per copy. In a discussion in the House on the Tourists Department’s report a number of members pleaded for advertising of scenic resorts in order to attract tourists from abroad. Mr T. D. Burnett alone pul in a plea for New Zealanders themselves. “Make our tourists resorts more accessible to our own people,” was his text, with special reference to Mount Cook and the Southern Alps.
